Heat pumps are the quiet workhorse of a lot of newer Hemet-area homes. One outdoor unit does both heating and cooling, which is efficient when it works and confusing when it doesn't. The single most common heat pump repair we run in Menifee and Temecula is a stuck reversing valve, the part that flips the system between cool mode and heat mode.
When that valve sticks, the system runs but blows the wrong temperature air. It looks like AC when you want heat, or the other way around. It's not a broken compressor and it's not low freon. It's a solenoid or a valve body issue and the fix is targeted, not a full system replacement.
Second most common is a defrost cycle that gets stuck. Even in Hemet, an outdoor coil can ice up on a cold, damp morning, especially in Winchester and out toward Idyllwild. A working defrost board reverses the system for a few minutes to melt the ice off. When the board or the sensor fails, the ice keeps building and the unit stops heating.
Refrigerant charge matters more on a heat pump than on a straight AC. A little low and it looks fine in summer but can't produce heat when the outdoor temperature drops. We check superheat and subcooling on every diagnostic and only add refrigerant when the numbers actually call for it, never as a guess.
One thing homeowners try that doesn't help: cranking the thermostat higher. On most heat pumps that just kicks in the electric backup heat, which is expensive and doesn't fix anything. If your bill jumps in a cold week, that's usually the sign. Turn it back to a normal setpoint and give us a call.
